Mission: To cultivate self-reliance in Africa
Motto: Development that Works!
ASAP Africa was created in 1992 by Tom Arsenault and Elizabeth Bara who met and married as Peace Corps volunteer teachers in rural Swaziland. Living and working in rural African schools, where the determination and untapped potential was obvious, inspired the couple on their journey to discover a new approach to development work. The goal: to create an organization whereby development projects and activities are not "inflicted" upon local people but truly spearheaded by capable members within those communities.
ASAP Africa's philosophy and values define who we are.
- ASAP Africa knows that the people living in a community are the only ones in a position to improve life within it.
- ASAP Africa recognizes the enormous potential of what people can achieve by working together.
- ASAP Africa increases the long-term impact of projects by recruiting and training local staff to develop the capacity of partner communities.
- ASAP Africa works towards achievement of our vision with honesty, diligence, patience, and uncompromising perseverance, battling mediocrity and complacency at all times.
- ASAP Africa has a passion for education - knowing that education is crucial to the long-term security and development of all nations.
Community Holistic Initiative for Local Development - CHILD -
describes ASAP's approach; which focuses on working together with local
government, Non-Governmental Organizations, Community Based
Organizations, schools and churches to enhance household & food
security and to improve rural education in the communities served. Each
and every child represents hope for the future and is the ultimate
beneficiary of ASAP’s work. Starting with the Internal Savings and
Lending project, once communities are empowered to work together for
positive change, the potential is limitless.
