Community Building thru Education: From 1994 to 2001 ASAP worked to improve rural education infrastructure and provide vocational skills training in Zimbabwe. Through ASAP's Community Building through Education Program ASAP assisted communities to build over 300 school building, working together with rural communities to identify and prioritize needs. Click here for a summary of these activities. Communities provided labor and locally available materials such as bricks, sand and water. ASAP provided construction materials and training to the local contractor, selected by the schools, and the Headmaster. Where possible, students enrolled in Secondary School Building courses actively participated in construction, providing hands-on application of skills.

Since 2001 Zimbabwe has faced severe hardships. The quality of life continues to decline even today. Schools began only requesting food hand-outs. Their pupils were fainting from starvation. Providing short-term food relief is contrary to ASAP's mission. Priorities changed, as did ASAP's program; to economic strengthening through IS&L and enhancing food security through agriculture skills training. ASAP's passion and commitment to education has not waned as it continues to actively support education through the Bridge the Gap Project in 142 schools.

It is so amazing what can be achieved when people work together!
In Malawi, where ASAP began operating in January 2009, economic strengthening and food security are ASAP's entry point. The Malawi Government identified improving education as the number one priority in its recent strategic plan. ASAP looks forward to working together with all stakeholders to improve access to and quality of education for the children of Malawi in the future.
